Bush Fires in Victoria Take Nearly 200 People

Since I have been here in Australia, one of the most devastating natural disasters in Australian history has occurred in the state of Victoria.

Because of the extraordinary heat, many bush fires have broken out in rural areas across Victoria.

The current death toll is 181, but the projected number of deaths is expected to exceed 300.

Complete communities, houses, and lives have been destroyed because of these bush fires, and they don’t seem to be stopping anytime soon.

For the last 2 weeks or so, it’s been the only thing on the television. It is similar to when Katrina hit the US… people have lost everything. And what is extremely sad about it is many people who died were trying to escape and got caught by the fires in their cars.

The government in Australia has declared it a national emergency and has issued relief programs for it.
