Things I have noticed since being here…

1) It is summertime… It’s burning hot! No more wintertime in Clovis, NM.

2) They don’t call bathrooms “bathrooms.” They call them “toilets.”

3) Despite having the conversion rate of 1 USD to 1.5 AUD, everything is so expensive over here! A big bottle of Pantene shampoo at Target was $26 AUD, which is about $18 USD. MUY CARO!

4) Trash is called “rubbish.”

5) McDonalds, Subway, 7/11, and KFC are everywhere!

6) There is NO free internet anywhere… except for McDonalds… you can always depend on McDonalds (haha).

7) Everything is on the metric system… No more miles, feet, inches, pounds… everything is in meters, kilometers, grams, etc. Also, the “Nutrition Facts” on food is different – I don’t understand it yet… so I have no clue how much fat, carbohydrates, sodium, etc. I am eating in relation to the recommended daily intake.

8) Telephone numbers are weird… they depend on who you are calling. Some numbers are only 5 numbers long.

9) They have everything we have in America (toiletries, food, movies, and music). The culture is very American-based. Most of their “top” music is by American artists.

10) Australians eat all their animal icons (emus, kangaroos, wallabies, everything) EXCEPT for koalas.

11) They drive on the left side of the road, and the driver’s seat is also on the left side.

12) Gas is really cheap – only about $1 USD (per liter).

13) Everything closes at 5-6 PM. The only thing that stays open is bars. I assume it’s because Australian culture favors family time at the end of the day.

14) Finally… there is no turning back. I’m here, and despite feeling kind of lost/alone, I don’t really have the option of going back home to the US. I have to stick this out and make the best of it… after all, it’s what I wanted.

15) All you need is kangaroos & boomerangs...!
